The fifth son of former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, Hannibal, has been released in Lebanon on bail of $893,000 after 10 years of detention without trial, the Lebanese NNA agency reported, "Komersant Ukrainian".

A month earlier, the court set the bail at $11 million, but reduced it after the defense’s objections. In addition, the court lifted the ban on Hannibal Gaddafi’s travel from Lebanon.

The Government of National Unity of Libya expressed gratitude to the President and the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament for their “cooperation that led to the release of Gaddafi”. The same statement expressed hope for “the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the development of cooperation in the political, economic and security spheres.”

Abduction of Hannibal Gaddafi in 2015

Reuters reminds that Hannibal Gaddafi was kidnapped by militants in Syria in 2015. He had been living there with his Lebanese wife and children after the overthrow of his father’s regime in Libya. In the same year, Lebanese authorities took him into custody and accused him of concealing information about the fate of Shiite Imam Musa al-Sadr and his two companions, who went missing in 1978 after a visit to Libya for talks with Muammar Gaddafi. At the time of al-Sadr’s disappearance, Hannibal Gaddafi was only two years old, and as an adult he did not hold any high positions in Libya.

in 2023, Hannibal Gaddafi went on a hunger strike to protest his detention, after which he needed to be hospitalized. in 2024, Human Rights Watch called for his release from prison in Lebanon and called his imprisonment “unjust” and “politically motivated.”
