MES clarifies language rules in education: document

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has provided official clarifications on the use of the state language in the educational process. The document clarifies the responsibilities of teachers, researchers and heads of educational institutions, and outlines exceptions and peculiarities of using other languages. The document was published on the Facebook page of the Red Governor public organization, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
State language is compulsory in the educational process
According to the current legislation, all heads of higher education institutions, teachers, researchers, and researchers are obliged to use the Ukrainian language during any events that are part of the educational process.
In classes (groups) with instruction in national minority languages, which are official languages of the European Union, the right to use the language of the respective national minority in the educational process along with the state language is guaranteed.
This applies to lectures, seminars, conferences, methodological meetings and any other official forms of educational or scientific activities.
What about private communication?
However, outside the formal educational process, the language issue is not directly regulated.
In particular, private communication between pupils and students during breaks, as well as contacts between parents and teachers, can take place in any language of the participants’ choice.
Why this is important
Thus, the MES emphasizes:
- the state language remains a key element in education;
- private communication is regulated by the choice of citizens, not by law;
- science requires access to all sources of knowledge, regardless of the country of origin.
