Power returned to Chornobyl NPP: experts assure that there is no radiation threat
1 October 23:38
In the evening of October 1, an emergency situation arose at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant due to massive shelling of the energy infrastructure of Kyiv region and the city of Slavutych. Power engineers promptly connected the Chornobyl nuclear power plant to the grid. The Ministry of Energy assured that the situation was under control, and there was no threat to the safety of the plant or the population. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
According to the Ministry of Energy, as a result of power surges, the New Safe Confinement, a key facility that isolates the destroyed fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and prevents the release of radioactive materials into the environment, was left without power supply.
“Experts are currently working to restore power supply,” the agency said.
Power restored at ChNPP, no threat
At about 23:00, the Ministry of Energy reported that power supply to all facilities of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had been restored.
Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk confirmed that the radiation level does not exceed the control indicators and there is no threat to the population.
“I am grateful to our power engineers for their lightning-fast and efficient work! Your work means safety for the whole of Ukraine and Europe,” Hrynchuk emphasized.
The Ministry of Energy calls for an international response
The Ukrainian side appealed to the EU, the US, the G7 and G20 countries to increase pressure on Russia.
The Ministry of Energy emphasized that “weak and half-hearted solutions will not work,” and only decisive action by the international community can prevent large-scale environmental and man-made disasters.
Strike on Slavutych and the consequences
The Russian army launched a missile attack on a power facility in Slavutych, the town where the Chornobyl plant workers live. As a result, Slavutych was left without electricity and partially without water supply.
Local authorities urged residents to remain calm, use the points of invincibility and prepare for temporary interruptions in utilities. To stabilize the situation in the city, power outage schedules have been introduced.
Energy situation in northern Ukraine remains critical
In addition to Kyiv region, Chernihiv and Sumy regions were subjected to massive shelling. In Chernihiv region, important energy facilities were damaged, causing large-scale power outages in several districts.
Also in Sumy region, Konotop and Shostka districts were partially de-energized. According to Sumyoblenergo, power crews are working to restore power supply as soon as possible.
The Ministry of Energy urged citizens to follow safety rules during air raids and limit electricity consumption in the evening to avoid overloading the grid.
