Sergeant Mykola Lupynis, an Armed Forces serviceman, UNA-UNSO activist, son of a prominent UNSO politician, dissident and Soviet-era political prisoner Anatoliy Lupynos, was killed at the front in the fight against the Russian invaders. This was reported by the spokesman for the Tavria operational group of troops, Dmytro Lykhoviy, on Facebook, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Kolya was seriously injured on 24 August and died today.

“Another great and painful loss. Mykola Lupynis Jr, a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a mortar operator, a sergeant, a UNSU member, the son of the legendary Uncle Tolia Lupynos, one of the founders of UNA-UNSO, has died,” he wrote.

Lykhoviy said he met Mykola last year when he was in Kyiv after being wounded. “He was a very positive, righteous guy – one of those who continued the work of his great parents, could do a lot in public life and politics.

At the time, he gave an interview to the media, where he said that he was very happy to have the opportunity to defend Ukraine, because he had always been surrounded by heroes. His father was a fighter for independence, and his friends were participants in wars and revolutions, as well as in the Ukraine without Kuchma protests.

“I was a kid, I couldn’t participate in those events. I thought: these are the heroes, and I’m just a so-so, hanging around them. But when the Revolution of Dignity and the war started, I realised that our generation also has to fight for an independent Ukraine. And I am glad that I can take part in it,” he said.

He also stressed that the country is currently undergoing a difficult test, but the Ukrainian nation and people are being strengthened.

“At a high price, at the cost of the best people. I have no doubt that we will win. But will the Ukrainians who will stay alive and rebuild the country from the ruins appreciate it? That’s what I doubt…”, Likhovoy quoted the soldier as saying.

On the Independence Day of Ukraine, 24 August, Mykola Lupynis wrote his last post online.

“Our parents won our Independence, we have to win freedom for our children!” the defender of Ukraine wrote in his post.
