The vessel was performing routine maintenance at the mouth of the Bystre River and had 11 crew members on board. Three workers were killed in the explosion. The rest of the sailors were taken to the hospital where they are being treated.
USPA expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and promised to provide the necessary support to all those affected.
“The sea approach channel of the Bystre mouth is temporarily closed for shipping. Vessels are currently moving to and from the ports of the Danube region through the Sulyn Canal,” the statement said.
Specialized services are currently working at the scene, and the circumstances of the incident are being investigated.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Navy banned ships carrying explosives from entering domestic ports. Importers reoriented such cargoes to ports in Moldova and Romania. Last year, Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria launched joint mine countermeasures missions in the Black Sea to ensure safe navigation.
