On the Brink of an “Iranian Apocalypse”: An IDF Officer Explains Why Trump Is Talking About the Downfall of Civilization

7 April 20:00

U.S. President Donald Trump’s ultimatum to Iran is coming to an end. While American and Israeli air forces methodically destroy Tehran’s military targets, the world holds its breath in anticipation of the outcome. In an exclusive comment to "Komersant Ukrainian", IDF reserve officer Grigory Tamar explained why this war has already changed the world order, why NATO effectively no longer exists, and why Ukrainians have reason to “smile broadly.”

Donald Trump has once again opted for a strategy of maximum pressure. His statement on Truth Social that “an entire civilization could be wiped out tonight, and it will never return” sent shockwaves through world capitals. However, behind the apocalyptic rhetoric lies a subtle calculation: Trump is directly hinting at the possibility of a deal with “smarter and less radical” representatives of the Iranian elite, effectively calling for an internal coup.

Iran responded by cutting off direct communication. According to the WSJ, this temporarily complicated negotiations, but strikes on infrastructure only intensified.

Military facilities could be reduced to ashes

Analyzing the current phase of the conflict, military expert Grigory Tamar emphasizes that hostilities are reaching their peak. Despite the loss of an American F-15 jet, the allies’ advantage is absolute.

“No, the intensity is not slowing down at all. Israeli and American aircraft continue to deliver powerful strikes against Iranian infrastructure. The fact that the Americans lost a fighter jet—well, okay, that happens. It’s a war, after all,” notes Grigory Tamar.

The expert emphasizes the importance of the humanitarian aspect, while advocating for the uncompromising destruction of the regime’s military capabilities:

“I am personally categorically opposed to striking power plants and desalination plants on the mainland, so that Iran’s civilian population does not suffer. But as for military facilities—they must simply be razed to the ground,”—Grigory Tamar.

The Death of NATO and the Birth of the “Alliance of Will”

One of Tamar’s most striking conclusions is the observation that NATO is effectively dead as a viable military structure. The war in Iran, like a litmus test, has revealed the profound degradation of European armies.

“NATO does not exist as a military alliance. NATO as a viable alliance capable of conducting combat operations—it does not exist. In military terms, Israel surpasses the European segment of NATO in terms of overall military capability,” asserts the IDF reserve officer.

Tamar cites staggering facts about the state of the former “great powers”:

  • United Kingdom: Four out of five nuclear submarines are under repair.
  • Germany: Military capabilities were systematically dismantled during Angela Merkel’s tenure.
  • Europe as a whole: EU countries are prohibiting Trump from using their airspace for troop redeployment.

Instead, a new circle of real U.S. allies is forming, which Tamar includes Ukraine, Israel, Poland, Finland, the Czech Republic, and South Korea.

For Ukraine, the destruction of Iran’s military capabilities directly eases the situation on the front lines. Every factory burned down in Tehran means fewer “Shaheds” and missiles delivered to the Russian army.

“This should bring a broad, uncontrollable smile to the faces of Ukrainian citizens, because all this ‘good’ that Israel and America are burning with a red-hot iron—it was all destined, in particular, for the Russian-Ukrainian front in the form of all manner of lethal goods,” Tamar concludes.

The expert reminds us that Iran is a massive country with a population of nearly 100 million people. Knocking such an ally out of “Putin’s circle” is a strategic objective worth a major war.

A Picture of Victory: What to Expect Tonight?

While the British are convening conferences in an attempt to diplomatically unblock the Strait of Hormuz, Israel and the U.S. are preparing for amphibious operations. What will become the symbol of victory? Tamar believes it doesn’t necessarily have to be a flag over the Reichstag.

“Images of victory can be very different. For example, a change of power in Iran is an image of victory. If Iran hands over its 460 kilograms of enriched uranium—that is an image of victory. Iran has enough material for 11 atomic bombs; this is a serious matter, and it is worth fighting for.”

Thus, behind Trump’s apocalyptic rhetoric about the “demise of civilization” likely lies not so much a desire to unleash a total war as a direct hint at an internal coup in Iran.

Trump is effectively sending a signal to Iran’s elites and military: the Ayatollah regime is leading the country to self-destruction, and the only way to save the state is to remove the radical leadership from power.

Thus, his words are not merely a military threat but also a tool of psychological pressure, aimed at provoking regime change at the hands of the Iranians themselves, thereby avoiding a protracted ground operation.
