At least 116 people have been killed in a stampede at a religious ceremony in northern India. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Associated Press.
The ceremony was reportedly attended by more than 15,000 people, although official permission to hold it was granted on the condition that no more than 5,000 people would take part in the event.
Thousands of people simultaneously rushed to leave the makeshift tent, triggering a stampede that killed at least 116 people, most of them women and children.
It was not immediately clear what triggered the panic after the incident. Local news reports quoted authorities as saying that heat and stuffiness in the tent may have been the cause.
According to the police, the stampede may have been caused by the overcrowding in the tent where the worshippers had gathered.
The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, called the incident an “extremely sad and heartbreaking” event and said that the state authorities would investigate the incident.
