The Security Service of Ukraine’s counterintelligence service has detained a citizen suspected of preparing a terrorist attack against the military in western Ukraine on behalf of Russian special services. This was reported by the SBU office in Ternopil region, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to the investigation, the suspect is a 19-year-old resident of the Chortkiv district who does not have an official job. In May 2025, he was recruited through an anonymous telegram channel that promised quick money.
At first, the curator assigned the performer a “test task” – to set fire to a relay cabinet on a railroad track near the city of Borshchiv. After successfully completing this task, the suspect was ordered to manufacture an improvised explosive device (IED) for a terrorist attack in the region.
However, the attack attempt was stopped – the SBU operatives detained the offender before the crime was realized. At the time of detention, he had already received instructions on how to make explosives from improvised means and began to purchase the necessary components.
During the searches, the SBU seized his cell phone to communicate with his handlers, as well as parts of the future explosive device, some of which he kept at home.
Investigators served the suspect a notice of suspicion under the following articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- ч. 2 Art. 113 (sabotage),
- ч. 1 of Article 14, Part 2 of Article 258 (preparation to commit a terrorist act).
The court imposed on him a measure of restraint in the form of detention. If proven guilty, he faces life imprisonment.
