On Friday evening, an emergency situation occurred at Armenia’s only nuclear power plant: as a result of a lightning strike, the facility was put into a safe shutdown mode. This was reported by AMI, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

No radiological threat was detected at the plant.

“The security systems are ultra-sensitive and respond to any situation,” the ministry explained.

The Ministry of Infrastructure of Armenia explained that the nuclear power plant was disconnected from the system, but workers are working to restart it.

“This is another proof that the large-scale modernisation work carried out in recent years, including on safety systems, was effective and yielded the expected result,” the statement said.

What is known about the Armenian NPP

The Armenian NPP, the only one in the South Caucasus region, is located near the town of Metsamor, about 30 km west of Yerevan.

The plant is one of the main sources of electricity in the country, providing up to 40% of the total output.

Its lifetime has been extended until 2026, and work is underway to extend it for another 10 years.
