Recruitment of volunteers to the Ukrainian Legion in Poland has started only now: the Ministry of Defence disclosed the number of applications

The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has announced the start of the “active phase” of the Ukrainian Legion project, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports. This initiative is aimed at attracting Ukrainians living abroad to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Thus, the first recruitment centre has been opened in the Polish city of Lublin on the basis of the Ukrainian consulate. It is open seven days a week from 9:00 to 17:00. More than 15 officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are here to provide advice and help with paperwork.

“The centre has a military medical commission (MMC), which includes doctors and medical staff with all the necessary equipment to conduct examinations and issue fitness for service certificates. After registration, the volunteers will be trained at the training ground deployed by the Polish side,”

– said First Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine Ivan Havryliuk.

He also added that within the project, Ukraine provides volunteers with uniforms and logistical support, while Poland provides weapons and equipment.

During the first days of the centre’s operation in Lublin, 196 applications were received.

The recruitment process includes a preliminary interview, document check, medical examination and signing of a contract. After that, volunteers will undergo a 35-day training course at a training ground with the possibility of further training at NATO bases.

Those interested in joining the Ukrainian Legion can apply via the official website(legion.army.gov.ua) or contact Ukrainian consulates and embassies.

As previously reported, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that Poland failed to recruit not only a legion but also a brigade of Ukrainians.

The creation of the Ukrainian Legion is envisaged by the Ukrainian-Polish security agreement. It involves the formation of a volunteer unit of Ukrainian citizens abroad who will be trained on the basis of the Polish armed forces.
