An inspiring story: Vitaliy Shumei, seriously wounded at the front, who has been cared for by his father for almost 2 years, spoke up

Vitaliy Shumei, a Ukrainian soldier with severe head injuries who was cared for by his father, has started to speak again. This was reported by volunteer Irina Timofeeva, Komersant ukrainskyi https://www.komersant.info/ reports.

Timofeeva noted that Shumei has been speaking for about a week and consciously forming words.

“He does not whisper, but speaks. More in the morning, and in the evening he is still tired. His brain is working! I’m crying! My father is crying too. He asks me to bow to everyone who supported the Shumei family and believed in them,”

– the volunteer wrote.

She added that she believes the soldier will soon get back on his feet.

What is known about Vitaliy Shumey

Vitaliy Shumey, a sergeant with the 72nd Separate Mechanised Brigade, originally from Shostka, Sumy region, was seriously wounded on 25 August 2022 while performing a combat mission.

Due to a severe head injury – a skull fracture on both sides – he lost the ability to move, speak and eat on his own. The soldier underwent three surgeries on his head and was treated in Dnipro, Kyiv and Chernihiv.

The soldier’s father was with him all the time, taking care of his son, reading books and messages from people wishing him a speedy recovery.

In May 2023, the soldier underwent several surgeries in Spain and has already spoken his first words.

on 17 January, the media reported that Shumei had not received a salary since March 2023 and did not have the status of a person with a disability.

Vitaliy Shumei is currently undergoing rehabilitation in the Modrychi centre in Lviv Oblast. FC Shakhtar pays for his treatment. Also, thanks to the intervention of Serhiy Nayev, the former commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Vitaliy’s payments were resumed.
