MP Nikolayenko to be tried for fatal road accident: details

The investigation has completed the investigation into MP Andriy Nikolayenko, who ran over an 18-year-old girl to death on the Kyiv-Chop highway in the village of Berezivka, Zhytomyr region, on 3 November 2023. Investigators recalled that on 3 November 2023, at about 10:00 a.m. on the Kyiv-Chop highway near the village of Berezivka, a car driven by a Ukrainian MP hit an 18-year-old girl who was crossing the road.
“The accused violated the traffic rules and exceeded the maximum speed limit, causing the collision,”

The accident involving Batkivshchyna MP Andriy Nikolayenko was first reported by the police, the State Bureau of Investigation and the media, and then the MP confirmed the accident on his Facebook page.

In February, the State Bureau of Investigation released its conclusion on the case, according to which the MP had exceeded the speed limit that day. In particular, cameras on the Kyiv-Chop highway recorded the MP exceeding the permissible speed of 40 to 50 km/h, including one of the cameras that recorded such an excess within the settlement where the tragedy occurred. This was confirmed by a photographic examination.
The investigation found that if the driver had complied with the traffic rules for driving at a speed of no more than 110 km/h and braked in time, the victim would have been able to leave the roadway.
It also became known that the culprit of the accident was systematically brought to administrative responsibility for speeding. In 2022-2023 alone, 22 decisions were issued against him.
The Member of Parliament ofUkraine is suspected of violating the rules of road safety by a person driving a vehicle, which caused the death of the victim, i.e. committing a criminal offence under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The sanction of the article provides for a sentence of imprisonment for up to 8 years.
