Aftermath of Russian attacks: power engineers record blackouts in 3 regions

18 December 12:52

As of December 18, Ukraine’s power system is operating under seasonal load, but remains vulnerable due to the effects of Russian attacks on energy facilities. Emergency restoration works are underway in a number of regions, and hourly power outages and power restrictions are in place in most areas. This was reported by the press service of Ukrenergo, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs

Consequences of the shelling of energy facilities

On the night of December 18, Russian troops attacked energy infrastructure in several regions of Ukraine. As a result of the attacks, some consumers were left without electricity in..:

  • Cherkasy region
  • Mykolaiv region
  • Zaporizhzhia region

Power engineers are working in an emergency mode to repair the damaged equipment and restore power to consumers as soon as possible. Emergency repair works are ongoing in all affected regions.

How the outage schedules work

Due to the previous massive attacks on the power grid, consumption restriction measures are currently in place in most regions of Ukraine, including

  • hourly outage schedules for household consumers;
  • power limitation schedules for industry and business.

Consumers are advised to check the official websites and pages of regional power distribution companies in their regions for up-to-date information on the time of outages at a particular address.

Electricity consumption: what the data show

According to the energy sector, the level of electricity consumption is in line with typical seasonal indicators.

on December 18, as of 9:30 am, consumption was at the level of the previous day.

The daily maximum on December 17 was recorded in the evening – it did not exceed the figures for December 16.

This indicates relative stability in demand, but the power system is still operating with limited reserves.

A call for economical use of electricity

In the regions where hourly blackouts are in effect, the power sector urges citizens to adhere to the regime of economical consumption, in particular

  • minimize the use of powerful electrical appliances during peak hours;
  • if possible, transfer energy-intensive processes to night time – after 23:00
  • avoid turning on several high-load appliances at the same time.

Conservative consumption will help reduce the duration and number of forced outages.
