Consequences of the Russian strike: Ukrenergo warns of possible power cuts

On the evening of 8 May, power outages are likely across Ukraine due to another massive Russian attack on the energy sector. Ukrenergo has warned about this, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“Tonight, from 18:00 to 23:00, there may be power cuts for household and industrial consumers across Ukraine. The restrictions will be evenly distributed across all regions. The exact outage schedules in each region will be published on the official websites of local power distribution companies,”

– the company said.

The nighttime attack and new damage to Ukrainian power plants’ equipment caused a shortage of electricity in the grid.

At the same time, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine said that it was not planning to impose any restrictions on household consumers (except for Kharkiv region).

“Following another massive attack on the power grid (including generation facilities), restrictions may be imposed on industrial consumers between 18:00 and 23:00 today,” the statement said,

The Ministry of Energy called for economical use of electricity during peak hours (from 7:00 to 10:00 and from 17:00 to 22:00). This will allow household consumers to keep the lights on.

On the night of 8 May, Russia launched its fifth massive missile and drone strike on Ukraine’s energy sector since 22 March. Power outages occurred in Dnipropetrovs’k, Donetsk, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Lviv, Mykolaiv, Poltava, Kharkiv and Sumy regions. During the morning peak hours, Ukraine requested emergency electricity supplies from the power systems of Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
