The Deadliest Attack: How the World Reacted to Russia’s Strike on Kyiv
17 June 16:50
A number of European embassies have responded to Russia’s massive nighttime shelling of a number of Ukrainian cities, which killed 10 civilians in Kyiv alone. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
Germany
German Ambassador to Ukraine Martin Jaeger said that Russia is not seeking a truce or negotiations. Russia wants to force Ukraine to surrender through military force.
France
The embassy responded to the missile and drone attack that killed many Kyiv residents.
A deadly attack on Ukraine by Vladimir Putin’s regime, whose cruelty and cynicism know no bounds. To the Kremlin, which wants to establish peace in the Middle East: start with Ukraine. Our condolences to the families. Our support to our colleagues in Kyiv,” the diplomatic mission said.
Poland
Foreign Ministry spokesman Pawel Wronski emphasized that official Warsaw is always with Ukraine and constantly puts pressure on Russia. “Right now, the agenda includes the introduction of the 18th package of sanctions and the establishment of a price limit for Russian oil, as this is what primarily feeds the Russian military machine.
We deeply sympathize with the people of Ukraine who are now under Russia’s carpet bombing,” Vronsky said.
Italy
The embassy said it strongly condemns Russia’s violence against civilians and reaffirmed that Ukraine can count on its support in its quest for a just peace.
Moldova
President Maia Sandu expressed her support.
Another night of Russian terror in Kyiv. Civilians killed, houses turned into ruins. This is cold-blooded, systematic violence. Moldova strongly condemns this cruelty,” the country’s leader said.
Norway
Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said that last night’s massive and brutal Russian strikes have killed and injured civilians across Ukraine, including in Kyiv. This attack exposes Russia’s ruthless way of waging war. Norway therefore stands firmly united with partners in supporting Ukraine’s fight for freedom.
Meanwhile, the United States was among the last to comment on the Russian strike on the Ukrainian capital on June 17. President Donald Trump said that the Russian missile and drone attack was “bad” and that it was necessary to “check if it’s true, we need to look into it.”
In turn, the UN said that the nighttime strike on Kyiv was probably the deadliest attack in almost the entire past year of the Russian-Ukrainian war. A similar number of civilian casualties in the capital was recorded only on July 8, 2024, when at least 32 Ukrainians were killed and 85 were wounded in an attack that also damaged the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital.
The latest attack comes as Russian forces have stepped up nighttime strikes with long-range weapons across the country in recent weeks, bombarding cities with hundreds of drones and missiles, the UN monitoring mission said in a statement.
