New sanctions war: why the US is putting pressure on Europe through India

1 September 10:06

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is actively lobbying European allies to impose sanctions against India similar to those already in place by the United States. This was reported by India Today, citing sources in the US government, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to the publication, the White House is demanding that European countries completely stop buying oil and gas from India, as well as impose secondary tariffs against New Delhi for continuing cooperation with Moscow in the energy sector.

Criticism of the Indian position

The United States accuses India of “fueling” Russian aggression against Ukraine by continuing to purchase Russian crude oil. Earlier, Trump had already imposed 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods for this very reason.

The Indian side sharply criticizes the double standards of the West, reminding that China remains the largest buyer of Russian oil, and European countries also continue to import energy from Russia, but avoid “tariff punishment.”

Europe’s position

Unlike the United States, most European countries have so far remained silent on trade relations with India and do not openly support American sanctions measures.

Sources in the White House report growing dissatisfaction with the European position. According to them, some EU leaders publicly support Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine, but behind the scenes are trying to prevent progress after the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska.

“White House officials are losing patience with European leaders who they believe are pushing Ukraine for unrealistic territorial concessions from Russia,”

– a senior administration official said.

SCO summit in focus

The issue of US tariffs on India and the Russia-Ukraine war are among the key topics for discussion at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, which is taking place these days.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are attending the event and, among other things, are holding bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.
