Where it happened
Crans-Montana is a popular ski resort town in the Swiss Alps, located about two hours from Bern. During the holiday season, the resort usually receives thousands of tourists from different European countries.
The Le Constellation bar was a well-known nightlife venue and, according to media reports, could accommodate up to 300 visitors. The establishment had two levels: an upper floor with TVs and a lower dance hall.

At a press conference, Valais cantonal police chief Frederic Gisler said that “several dozen” people are believed to be dead, and more than 100 people were injured.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citing the Swiss police, put the preliminary death toll at about 40. The process of identifying the victims is currently underway and the final figures may change.

Most of the victims were seriously injured and suffered significant burns. They were taken to the hospital in the canton of Valais, where the intensive care unit is currently overcrowded.
What investigators say
Valais Cantonal Prosecutor Beatrice Pilloux said that law enforcement officers are investigating the circumstances of the tragedy, but emphasized:
“In no way is this an attack of any kind.”
The investigation is focused on establishing the cause of the fire, compliance with fire safety standards and the number of people who were in the facility at the time of the fire.
It is expected that in the coming days, the authorities
- release updated data on the number of deaths,
- provide more information about the cause of the fire,
- and check other facilities at the resort for compliance with safety requirements.
