A new round of trade war: Trump imposes 30% duty on imports from Mexico and the EU
12 July 21:15
US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 30% tariffs on imports of goods from Mexico and the European Union. The new duties will come into effect on August 1.
Trump made the announcement in a letter published on his Truth Social platform.
The message does not specify which categories of goods will be subject to the new tariff. The imposition of duties could affect Washington’s trade relations with Mexico City and Brussels, which have previously been strained by the Trump administration’s policy of protectionism and economic nationalism.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reacted to Trump’s decision and noted that a 30% tariff on EU exports would hurt businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. At the same time, Brussels will continue to work on an agreement with the United States to conclude it by August 1.
