In the high-profile case of Yevhen Pavlyshyn, who is on trial for beating a woman in Rivne region who later died in hospital, prosecutors from the Office of the Prosecutor General will continue to support the state prosecution. This was reported by the office in response to a request from "Komersant Ukrainian".
The PGO reminded that following a trial in the court of first instance, the Volodymyrets District Court of Rivne Region found the accused guilty of committing criminal offenses under Part 1 of Article 122 (“Intentional bodily harm of moderate severity”) and Part 1 of Article 296 (“Hooliganism”) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine on June 25, 2025. He was sentenced to two years in prison, but under Article 75 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine was released from serving his sentence with a probationary period of two years.
on June 27, 2025, the prosecutor filed an appeal, which emphasizes the court’s misapplication of the law and the excessive leniency of the sentence,” the PGO noted.
The department added that prosecutors of the Prosecutor General’s Office will continue to support the public prosecution.
The tragic incident at the campground
We are talking about the events of the summer of 2022 at the Kholodok recreation center in the village of Rudka, Varas district. According to the investigation, 27-year-old Yevhen Pavlyshyn, while intoxicated, severely beat a 64-year-old vacationer and her daughter. The woman was seriously injured, and after several days in the hospital, she died of a head injury and internal injuries.
The case was accompanied by numerous scandals. Initially, the police classified the defendant’s actions as premeditated murder, but later the charges were reduced. Relatives of the deceased and civic activists claimed corrupt influence and falsification of examinations, emphasizing that the true circumstances of the tragedy were being concealed.
Controversial verdict and public outcry
The decision of the local court caused a wave of outrage. The judges determined that the victim’s death was allegedly not caused by the beating, but by “falling in a hospital room,” and therefore qualified the crime only as “bodily harm of moderate severity.”
The convict was sentenced to a suspended sentence and ordered to pay the victim’s relatives only 50 thousand hryvnias in moral compensation.
