The Nobel Prize in Physics in 2025 was awarded for research in quantum mechanics to American scientists John Clarke, Michel H. Devore, and John M. Martinis for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in an electrical circuit. This was announced by representatives of the Nobel Committee during the ceremony, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

Quantum mechanics allows a particle to pass through a barrier through a process called tunneling. Once a large number of particles are involved in the process, the quantum mechanical effects usually become negligible. The laureates’ experiments have shown that quantum mechanical properties can be reproduced on a macroscopic scale.

In 2024, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Hopfield and Jeffrey Hinton for their research in neural network machine learning.

Earlier, the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine were announced. They are Americans Mary Brunckow, Fred Ramsdell, and Japanese Shimon Sakaguchi, who realized what prevents the immune system from attacking the cells of their own body.
