OnlyFans is under attack: Sweden bans online sex ordering
23 May 2025 08:37
The Swedish parliament has passed a new law criminalizing the purchase of sexual services in the digital space. The innovation will come into force on July 1, 2025, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports, citing Svenska Dagbladet.
The Swedish model
Unlike most countries in the world where prostitution itself is prohibited, Sweden has taken a different path since 1999: it punishes not those who provide sex services, but those who buy them. That is, the client goes to prison, not the sex worker.
Until now, this approach applied only to face-to-face meetings, and the online space remained outlawed. Now this gap has been closed.

What exactly becomes illegal
The new law prohibits:
- Paying another person to perform sexual acts at a distance (for example, via video communication) specifically for the customer.
- Ordering personalized sexual content on demand.
- Facilitate or economically exploit people to provide paid sexual services online.
Violations are punishable by severe penalties: up to one year in prison for purchasing sexual services and up to four years for pimping, i.e., organizing the transmission of personalized sexual content.
OnlyFans remains legal, but with restrictions
Platforms like OnlyFans are not subject to a complete ban. Users will be able to:
- View and pay for ready-made content.
- Subscribe to creators’ accounts.
- Buy pre-recorded videos and photos.
Only the ordering of personalized content will be prohibited – when a user asks to perform specific sexual actions specifically for him or her.
It is important to note that not all types of content fall under the new ban. Striptease and nude demonstrations will not be considered sexual acts within the meaning of the law, so they will remain allowed.
