Orban: Hungary will not adopt EU budget because of aid to Ukraine

Hungary will not approve the draft EU budget for 2028-2034 proposed by the European Commission, as it provides for the allocation of funds to Ukraine.

This was stated by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

“I will never agree that Hungarians will receive the funds they are entitled to only if they obey Brussels’ military, immigration, and gender policies. It would be nice if Brussels learned the Hungarian answer: “Never,” the politician wrote on his account.

On July 16, the European Commission proposed a significant increase in the total EU budget for 2028-2034 – from the current 1.21 trillion euros to 1.816 trillion. The most ambitious changes in the draft include a reduction in financial support for farmers in the EU, increased spending on innovation and technology, as well as on “external actions,” including support for Ukraine in the war unleashed by Russia.

It is planned to allocate 100 billion euros out of 200 billion euros under “external actions” to restore Ukraine, which is suffering from a full-scale Russian invasion. This is a “long-term commitment to the recovery” of Ukraine, said European Commissioner for Trade Petr Serafin.

The item on the allocation of funds for Ukraine in the EU budget, along with the reduction of support for European farmers, drew sharp criticism from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The politician directly linked these two budget items, saying that “Ukraine will receive significant funding, while European farmers will be the losers.”
