Poisoning in the Rada not confirmed: what really happened to the MPs

19 February 14:06

The illness of the MPs is not related to the food served in the Verkhovna Rada canteen.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to a statement by the parliament’s press service.

Representatives of the Center for Preventive Medicine of the State Administration of Affairs inspected the cafeteria and its employees, as well as the food and the food preparation process. Drinking water and water used for food preparation were also tested.

“PCR testing has established that the individuals who submitted samples were found to have the same type of virus – norovirus (an acute infectious disease that often spreads in closed and crowded spaces and is transmitted by contact and airborne droplets) , ” the statement said.

It is noted that the Council has taken additional measures to prevent the spread of infection.

What preceded

Recall that MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak previously reported that the Verkhovna Rada had ended its plenary week early and would not hold any votes until February 24. According to him, there were not enough votes in the chamber to make decisions.

The MP said that the reasons for the “empty” hall were the absence of many MPs abroad, as well as the poisoning of some of them. He added that a pause had been announced in the work of parliament.

Later, the Verkhovna Rada confirmed that about two dozen deputies had been poisoned. A number of media outlets reported that the deputies may have contracted rotavirus in Bukovel.

Rotavirus outbreak in Bukovel

It should be noted that at the end of January, an outbreak of rotavirus was recorded in Bukovel. Several dozen people with similar symptoms were taken to the resort’s hospital at that time. The patients had severe diarrhea, vomiting, high fever, and weakness.

Why rotavirus is dangerous

As is known, rotavirus is a virus that causes acute intestinal infection, most often in young children. It is transmitted through dirty hands, water, food, or other objects. The main symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and weakness. The main danger of rotavirus is dehydration, so it is important to drink plenty of fluids during the illness. There is a vaccine that significantly reduces the risk of severe infection.
