The trap of Western aid: 100 km that prevent Ukraine from effectively defending itself

Military journalist Vladyslav Selezniov has revealed the paradoxical situation in which Ukraine finds itself due to restrictions on the use of long-range weapons.

In an exclusive commentary to Komersant ukrainskyi, he argues that Ukraine has fallen into a kind of “trap” due to the conditions imposed by its Western partners when providing weapons.

“Now we have permits to use this type of weapon only up to 100 km, which, of course, creates very serious problems for us. Our intelligence clearly knows that Russian airfields where guided missile carriers are deployed are located at distances of 150-300 km from the border with Ukraine, while we have the technical and legal authority to use missiles at distances up to 100 km,”

– selezniov said, emphasising the absurdity of the situation.

According to him, there is no hope that the US partners will be persuaded and given permission to strike deep into Russia:

“We recently heard them say that if Russia scales up its offensive, we will change our position. It did scale up, and they shelled Okhmatdyt and a maternity hospital in Kyiv. Has anything changed? No.”

Therefore, the expert calls for relying only on our own strength.

“We should work to increase the capabilities of our manufacturers, in particular, the production of Neptune missiles. But there are problems here too. Arrivals at Pivdennyi in Dnipro, arrivals at the production facility in Kyiv near Lukianivka indicate that the enemy knows where our missile production units are located.”

Western weapons and permits for their use

As is well known, the United States(and Germany after them) allow the use of weapons provided by them only for strikes on the border territories of Russia. This permission was granted by US President Joe Biden only at the end of May, and before that, strikes on Russian territory with US weapons were generally prohibited.

However, towards the end of June, unofficial statements were heard from the US side that the restrictions “do not apply to geography or a certain radius”. This means that Ukraine is allegedly able to strike at those facilities and territories from which attacks on Ukraine are directly directed, even if they are deeper than the border areas.

Experts say that border strikes will not change the situation at the front, so Zelenskyy is asking his partners for permission to use their weapons on Russian territory. Some Western countries have already given such permission.

A classic military strategy involves trying to move the fighting to the enemy’s territory as quickly as possible.
