Under fire and cold: how Ukraine enters the new heating season
28 October 14:48
on October 29, Kyiv will start the heating season in its housing stock. This was announced by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, noting that the decision was made taking into account weather conditions, energy security and the needs of the city’s residents, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Heat supply will start gradually, with the system deployment taking up to seven days.
Since the beginning of October, hospitals, schools, kindergartens and other social facilities have been heated in Kyiv.
What is known about the heating season 2025
This year, Ukraine is entering the heating season amid daily Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that heating will start across the country on October 28.
According to the government, 13 regions have already started connecting residential buildings, including Kyiv region, where connections are made at the request of service companies.
Mykola Kalashnyk, the head of the KOVA , emphasized that communities have made extensive preparations, including repairing boiler houses, updating heating networks, and installing cogeneration units.
However, he urged residents to use heat rationally, as “the enemy continues to attack critical infrastructure on a daily basis .”
Situation in the regions
According to the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development, more than 55% of social facilities in Ukraine are already receiving heat, including more than 5,000 kindergartens, nearly 6,000 schools and more than 2,000 hospitals.
More than 17,500 boiler houses and 17,000 kilometers of heating networks have been prepared for the heating season, of which 340 kilometers have been replaced.
At the same time, officials predict a “difficult winter” due to the shelling of energy facilities, but emphasize that the technical readiness of utilities allows for a stable supply of heat.
What it means
The start of the heating season in the capital is not only a matter of comfort, but also a test of the country’s energy resilience before the winter months.
Ukraine is entering the cold period with the experience of the last winter, when the energy system withstood massive blows, but risks remain.
The government expects that a combination of economical consumption, repaired grids, and quick response to accidents will get it through this season without critical losses.
