The United States, Russia and the “peace” process

During the election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly promised that he would stop the war in the first hundred days of his second presidency, and sometimes said he would do it in 24 hours. But by the end of April, a fresh wave of Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities showed what his diplomacy was worth without clear pressure on the Kremlin.

Despite the loud promises of the United States, the Kremlin is standing firm. Putin insists that Ukraine recognize four Ukrainian regions as Russian, even with the territories that Russia has not occupied. This absurd demand is unacceptable to Kyiv. Negotiations seem to be ongoing, but Moscow has never demonstrated any willingness to deviate from these principles.

Even after the phone call between Trump and Putin, Russia continues to launch missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities. This clearly illustrates that the Kremlin is not taking any real steps to meet the demands of the Ukrainian people.

Against this backdrop, the United States accuses both sides of being unwilling to move toward rapprochement, despite the fact that the Ukrainian side demonstrates it to the maximum extent possible and agrees to almost all constructive US proposals. After failing in this area, the United States is now claiming that it “may withdraw” from the “peace” process.

The practical absence of a U.S. response to the latest wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities is illustrative. Moreover, there have been reports from Washington that the United States will cut aid to Ukraine next year.
