The South Korean Foreign Ministry has stated that it is considering various measures to support Ukraine in its war with Russia.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Yonhap.
It is noted that the issue of joining the initiative to supply American weapons to the war-torn country is under consideration.
“The government continues to consult with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on various measures to support Ukraine,” said a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to a diplomatic source, among the support measures under consideration is a NATO initiative to purchase American weapons for Ukraine, known as the “Priority Urgent Requirements List” (PURL).
It is important to note that even if South Korea decides to join the PURL, Seoul’s contribution may be limited to the purchase of non-lethal weapons.
The publication recalls that Australia and New Zealand, which are not NATO members, participated in the PURL. Japan, which is also not a member of NATO, is expected to announce its intention to participate in this initiative, according to the Japanese agency Kyodo News. The report also states that the equipment purchased with Japan’s support will be limited to non-lethal items such as vehicles and radar systems.
South Korea has provided Ukraine with only non-lethal and other humanitarian aid since the start of the war with Russia in 2022.
