Poland intends to shoot down Russian drones over Ukraine without the prior approval of NATO or the European Union (EU).
This is reported by Euractiv, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to journalists, Warsaw is preparing to amend the law on the deployment of armed forces abroad. The draft, submitted by the Ministry of Defense in June, is expected to be considered on an expedited basis.
Initially, the law allowed the president to send troops abroad at the request of the government in cases of armed conflict, peacekeeping missions, the fight against terrorism, or the evacuation of citizens. However, in 2022, the day before the war in Ukraine broke out, the Law and Justice government amended the law to require the consent of NATO, the EU, and the state on whose territory the Polish military would operate.
Later, the commission investigating Russian influence changed its criticism, noting that they effectively deprive Warsaw of the ability to respond independently, for example, to the threat of drones launched from Ukraine or Belarus.
According to Euractiv, the current ruling coalition plans to abolish these restrictions using the “shoot first, ask later” principle, which will give the military more flexibility in responding to threats.
