Poland is experiencing a demographic crisis, as the number of births in the country is the lowest since World War II. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to a a study by the Of the Central Statistical Office.
The country is facing a decline in the birth rate, which may be a long-term trend. The demographic crisis has a significant impact on the size and structure of the population. The number of births has fallen to a record low, failing to ensure a sufficient level of intergenerational reproduction.
One of the key factors affecting the birth rate is the postponement of the decision to start a family by young people. Young people postpone having children or do not have them at all. The Central Statistical Office states that to ensure stable demographic development of the country, it is necessary to have about 210-215 births per 100 women aged 15-49 each year, but currently only about 116 children are born.
In addition, the average age group of mothers at childbirth is growing, leading to an increase in the average age of women giving birth. At the end of 2023, the average age at first birth was 29 years, which is six years older than in 1990-2000. In addition, the number of births performed by foreign women who decide to give birth in Poland is growing.
Forecasts show that Poland’s population will decline by 2060, especially due to increased mortality among baby boomers of the 1980s, who are approaching the age of highest mortality, as well as a decline in the number of births.
