Mircea Lucescu, the legendary coach of “Shakhtar” and “Dynamo,” has died, according to media reports

Renowned Romanian soccer coach Mircea Lucescu has died. He was 80 years old.

The news of his death was reported by journalist Emanuel Roșu and Gazeta Sporturilor, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to media reports, on April 3, the coach suffered an acute myocardial infarction, after which he was hospitalized in the intensive care unit. On April 5, doctors placed him in an induced coma due to a recurrent episode of severe arrhythmia, and on the evening of April 7, news of his death was reported.

Coaching career: from Romania to Italy

Lucescu began his coaching career at FC Corvinul Hunedoara.

Later, he managed:

  • Romania national football team
  • FC Dinamo Bucharest

In the 1990s, he worked in Italy, where he coached:

  • AC Pisa 1909
  • Brescia Calcio
  • AC Reggiana 1919
  • Inter Milan

He also managed the Romanian club FC Rapid București twice.

His most successful period was at Shakhtar

The coach achieved his greatest successes at FC Shakhtar Donetsk.

He worked at the club from 2004 to 2016.

During this time, the team:

  • played 573 matches under his leadership;
  • won 22 trophies;
  • won the 2008–09 UEFA Cup—the club’s greatest European achievement.

This title became one of the most significant in the history of Ukrainian club football.

His tenure at Dynamo Kyiv

In 2020, Lucescu took charge of FC Dynamo Kyiv.

His tenure at the club lasted until 2023.

During this time, the team played 118 matches:

  • 65 wins
  • 19 draws
  • 34 losses

His appointment at the time caused quite a stir due to his long tenure as coach at Shakhtar.

Mircea Lucescu is considered one of the most influential coaches in the history of Romanian and Ukrainian soccer.

His career spanned over 40 years, and the teams under his leadership won trophies in various European countries.
