Ihor Mitiukov, “one of the architects” of Ukraine’s financial system, has died: what is known about him

The Ministry of Finance of Ukraine has announced the death of Igor Mityukov. The former Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine for Financial and Banking Affairs (1994–1995) and Minister of Finance of Ukraine (1997–2001) passed away on April 7, 2026, at the age of 74. The Ministry of Finance called him one of the architects of the financial system of independent Ukraine, reports "Komersant Ukrainian"

The ministry emphasized that Igor Mityukov dedicated years to building and stabilizing the state’s financial system during a difficult period of its formation. The ministry also noted that his professionalism, strategic vision, and sense of civic responsibility served as an example for many generations of financiers.

What is known about Igor Mityukov

Ihor Mitiukov was among the key Ukrainian government officials who shaped the country’s financial policy in the 1990s and early 2000s. He served as Deputy Prime Minister for Financial and Banking Affairs and later headed the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine.

One of the key milestones in his career was his role in Ukraine’s entry into international capital markets. It was under his leadership that the state first began utilizing such external financing instruments and engaging more actively with international financial organizations, particularly the IMF.

Prior to his government service, Mitiukov represented Ukraine to the European Union as a special government representative, and after completing his term as Minister of Finance, he continued his diplomatic career. From 2002 to 2005, he served as Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, and also represented the country at the International Maritime Organization.

After leaving public service, Ihor Mitiukov worked in international financial institutions and held positions in supervisory and financial institutions in Ukraine. In particular, his biography mentions work related to Morgan Stanley, and in recent years—participation on the supervisory board of Ukrposhta.

Where will the farewell ceremony for Mityukov take place?

The farewell ceremony for Mityukov will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on April 10, 2026, at the National Philharmonic of Ukraine.

The former minister will be buried at the Baikove Cemetery.
