27 March 20:20

Oleksiy Kavitsky, an entrepreneur and head of the e-commerce division at Helen Marlen Group, has died at the age of 39. The company’s press office confirmed the news but did not disclose the cause of death, according to Forbes, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

Kavitsky was the son of the company’s founders, Mykhailo Kavitsky and Oksana Kavitskaya.

He passed away on March 24, 2026. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed. Kavitsky was considered one of the drivers of the digital transformation of Ukraine’s premium fashion retail market.

Who is Alexei Kavitsky

Alexey Kavitsky was a representative of the second generation of a business family that created one of the largest luxury retailers in Ukraine.

He:

  • headed the e-commerce division of the Helen Marlen Group;
  • joined the company in 2011;
  • spent nearly 15 years working on the digital transformation of the business.

He received his education at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied marketing and business analytics.

How Helen Marlen Group Came to Be

The company was founded in 1994 by Mykhailo Kavitsky and Oksana Kavitska.

It started as a small boutique selling Italian shoes. Over time, the company became one of the leading importers of luxury brands in Ukraine.

Today, the chain works with more than 190 global brands, including:

  • Gucci
  • Burberry
  • Salvatore Ferragamo
  • Loro Piana
  • Christian Louboutin

Some of these brands are available exclusively on the Ukrainian market.

A pioneer in fashion e-commerce

After returning to Ukraine following his studies in 2011, Oleksiy Kavitsky proposed developing online sales.

At that time, the premium fashion market was virtually nonexistent in the digital space:

  • the main audience of luxury boutiques was older;
  • purchases were made primarily offline;
  • social media had not yet become a key communication channel.

Kavitsky began implementing:

  • online stores and marketplaces;
  • digital fitting rooms;
  • tools for creating personalized style selections.

New projects and experiments

In 2017, together with partners, he created the online platform Posh (later renamed Umberfirm), which featured thousands of luxury brands.

The project was subsequently integrated into the Helen Marlen Group as an outlet platform.

Other initiatives include:

  • the launch of the Samsonika R&D lab in 2018;
  • the creation of the Helen Marlen marketplace;
  • participation in social entrepreneurship—the Urban Space 500 restaurant.

The Man and His Mindset

Colleagues described Kavitsky as an innovator who tried to stay ahead of trends.

He was interested in:

  • economics and the social sciences;
  • the works of Robert Sapolsky, Ha-Joon Chang, and Philip Zimbardo;
  • classical literature, particularly the works of Mykhailo Kotsyubynsky;

He was also a big soccer fan.

What legacy did he leave behind

Oleksiy Kavitsky’s contribution is associated with the digital transformation of Ukrainian luxury retail.

His key achievements:

  • the development of e-commerce in the premium fashion segment;
  • the launch of marketplaces and online platforms;
  • integration of technology into fashion retail;
  • shaping a new culture of digital fashion sales in Ukraine.

Colleagues say he raised the bar for the entire fashion market and was among the first to initiate the industry’s digital transformation long before it became a global trend.
