Over 8 months of the simplified mechanism for the return of soldiers who have left their units without permission, more than 29,000 people have returned to the Armed Forces.

Director of the State Bureau of Investigation Oleksiy Sukhachov told Interfax-Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to him, the current mechanism allows soldiers who first left the unit without permission to return to service with the preservation of monetary, food, and clothing support. In addition, they can be released from criminal liability by a court decision.

As a reminder, in April 2025, the Verkhovna Rada set a deadline for voluntary return from the NWC – until August 30.

The first stage of the mechanism lasted from November 29, 2024, to March 1, 2025. During this time, almost 21,100 soldiers returned. They were reinstated with payments, social guarantees, and released from liability.

After March 1, returning is also possible, but under a different and more complicated mechanism.

The President had previously recognized an increase in the number of the AFU in 2024, but, according to him, the situation began to improve in the fall.
