Preventive power outages are designed to protect the power grid

The day before, due to the threat of missile attacks, emergency blackouts were introduced in Kyiv, Kyiv, Dnipro, Donetsk and Odesa regions. After the threat of missile attacks disappeared, the restrictions were lifted. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
Subsequently, Yasno explained what a preventive outage is and how it works.
Consumers were reminded that the power grid is a chain of power facilities connected in series. And when one of the links stops working, the consumer is disconnected, and a short circuit occurs at the generation facility or substation due to excess electricity and possible equipment fire.
Therefore, to reduce the risk of overloads, power plants reduce electricity production.
Previously, TPPs and CHPPs helped to quickly manage generation volumes. However, the summer shelling severely damaged thermal generation, so sometimes we have to maneuver with the help of other facilities that are not quite designed for this purpose.
This is the same reason why we can’t turn the power back on as quickly as we would like. After the power unit is launched, it takes some time to gain power.
What types of power outages are used
As DTEK explains, all power outages for households can be divided into 2 types: emergency and stabilization.
Emergency outages occur when some element of the energy infrastructure fails. They can be
– emergency, which are related to military operations and can occur if energy infrastructure facilities are damaged or destroyed due to shelling,
– local emergency outages when power grids in a specific limited area fail.
Stabilization outages are carried out to balance the operation of the power system. They are initiated by NPC Ukrenergo. This happens when the volume of generation is less than the volume of consumption, or the infrastructure is so damaged that it cannot transmit the necessary power to consumers. Therefore, while the repair of power facilities is underway, electricity supply to customers must be temporarily limited.
What is the difference between stabilization and emergency outages?
The main difference between these two types of outages is that stabilization outages are predictable and occur on schedule. Emergency outages cannot be predicted and are not scheduled.
