President signs law to strengthen SBU: what will change

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a law that provides for an increase in the number of employees of the Security Service of Ukraine and assigns 10,000 people to the Special Operations Center A. This is evidenced by the card of draft law 13353 on the website of the Verkhovna Rada, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
The Verkhovna Rada had previously passed this bill.
Instead of the Center for Special Operations to Combat Terrorism, the Center for Special Operations “A” will be created to carry out operational and combat activities. The law, among other things, increases the number of employees of the Center for Special Operations “A” to 10 thousand people.
The text of the draft law states that it is planned to increase the total number of the SSU:
- in peacetime – from 27 thousand to 37 thousand people, of which the number of the SBU unit that carries out operational and combat activities and special measures (Center of Special Operations A) is 10 thousand people;
- during a special period (except for the period of martial law) – from 31 thousand to 41 thousand people, of which the number of CCA A units is 10 thousand people;
- for the period of martial law – in the amount according to the mobilization plan for a special period, with the number of CCA A units during the period of martial law being at least 10 thousand people.
The law also provides for the grounds and procedure for the use of weapons and special means for the SSU.
The SSU has the right to use and employ weapons and military equipment during:
- conducting anti-terrorist operations,
- carrying out measures to ensure national security and defense,
- repulsing and deterring armed aggression against Ukraine,
- in the performance of tasks related to participation in the defense of the state in the manner prescribed for units,
- military units and subdivisions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in accordance with the procedures and cases established for them.
The mechanisms for organizing the work of the SSU are improved by this law, and the social protection of its employees is strengthened.
