Putin has announced an Easter truce: when will it begin and how long will it last?
9 April 22:43
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has announced a so-called Easter truce. According to him, Russian troops are to observe a ceasefire during the Easter holiday period. The statement was reported by Russian propaganda media, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
When the Easter truce is to take effect
According to the published information, the truce is declared from 4:00 p.m. on April 11 until the end of the day on April 12, 2026.
The report notes that this decision is linked to the approaching Orthodox holiday of Easter, which in church tradition is called the Bright Resurrection of Christ.
What exactly did Putin say
According to Russian media reports, Putin stated that he had instructed his troops on the front lines to observe the Easter truce. He also expressed hope that the Ukrainian side would allegedly “follow the Russian Federation’s example.”
At the same time, the Russian dictator instructed the occupying forces to “cease hostilities for the duration of the truce, but to be ready to respond.” This very wording has already raised questions, as it leaves room for the continuation of hostilities under the pretext of an alleged “response” to Ukraine’s actions.
Why the topic of an Easter truce has become relevant
The idea of an Easter truce had previously been raised by Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Kyiv had conveyed a new proposal to the Kremlin regarding a ceasefire at least for the duration of the Easter holidays.
However, as of April 9, according to the Ukrainian side, Moscow had not responded to this initiative. Moreover, the Kremlin stated on the same day that Putin had allegedly not yet made any decisions regarding an Easter truce.
That is precisely why the Russian leader’s current statement comes as a surprise and has become a notable political event against the backdrop of previous refusals and silence from the Kremlin.
Why there is skepticism about this truce
Skepticism regarding the announced Easter truce stems from past experience. Last year, Putin also agreed to a so-called Easter truce, which was supposed to last from the evening of April 19 until midnight on April 21.
However, according to Ukrainian military officials, no significant changes occurred on the front lines at that time. Gunfire rang out on Easter, enemy assaults continued, and there was no actual cessation of hostilities.
That is precisely why many are viewing Russia’s current statement with caution.
What is being said in Ukraine
As of the time this information was published, the Ukrainian side had not officially commented on it. At the same time, Andriy Illienko, an officer of the “Svoboda” battalion and former MP, previously emphasized that Russia has already ignored similar so-called ceasefires, so they may have no real impact on the situation on the battlefield.
What the Easter truce means now
Formally, this refers to a temporary ceasefire from the evening of April 11 until the end of April 12. However, given past experience and the wording of the statement itself, the main question remains not only whether the ceasefire has been declared, but also whether it will actually be observed on the front lines.
