The Council has established a single payment to the families of deceased and missing defenders

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has decided to set a single maximum amount of compensation for families of deceased and missing servicemen at 15 million hryvnia. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
What is changing
Previously, the families of immediately confirmed deceased military personnel received a one-time payment of 15 million hryvnia, while the families of missing persons could actually receive a larger amount thanks to monthly financial support until the soldier was declared deceased.
Now, a single limit of 15 million hryvnia has been set to ensure equality and fairness in social support.
How the new mechanism will work
- Families of missing persons will continue to receive the soldier’s monetary allowance.
- If a soldier is declared dead, the family will receive the difference between the funds already paid and the limit of 15 million hryvnia.
- If the soldier has written a personal order, the funds will be paid to the person specified by him.
- Part of the payments may be kept in a deposit account until the status is clarified.

Important detail: no need to return the money
If a soldier who was considered missing in action returns alive, the funds already paid out do not need to be returned.
Also, if the amount of payments exceeded UAH 15 million before the changes in legislation, the state will not require the difference to be returned.
Position of the Ministry of Defense
The ministry emphasizes:
“The families of missing and deceased soldiers will receive the same payment from the state. This will be fair.”
The decision is intended to eliminate inequality and ensure a unified approach to social support for the families of defenders.
