The Council of the European Union has decided to extend sectoral economic sanctions against Russia for another six months – until January 31, 2026. This is stated in the official report of the EU Council, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The sanctions, first introduced on July 31, 2014 in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, cover a wide range of restrictions. They relate to trade, finance, energy, technology and dual-use goods, industry, transportation and luxury goods.

The main restrictions include:

  • a ban on imports of marine crude oil and certain petroleum products from Russia to the EU;
  • disconnection of a number of Russian banks from the SWIFT system;
  • suspension of the licenses of several pro-Russian media outlets that spread disinformation.

The EU regularly reviews the sanctions regime and extends it in response to Russia’s actions that undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
