The Council of the European Union has extended economic sanctions against the Russian Federation for an additional six months, restricting its activities in the areas of trade, finance, technology and dual-use goods. This was reported by the with reference to the press service of the EU Council.

According to the official report, these sanctions were first imposed in 2014 in response to Russia’s war against Ukraine and have been significantly expanded since February 2022 due to unprovoked, unjustified and illegal military aggression against Ukraine.

Therestrictions include a ban on the import and maritime transportation of Russian oil and certain oil products to the EU, the disconnection of several Russian banks from the SWIFT system, and the suspension of broadcasting and licensing of Kremlin media outlets engaged in disinformation.

In addition, the EU Council has introduced additional measures to strengthen the EU’s ability to counter sanctions circumvention.

These measures are complemented by other restrictions, such as sanctions on economic relations with the occupied Crimea and the “DPR” and “LPR” regions, individual sanctions, which include asset freezes and travel bans for individuals and entities, as well as diplomatic measures.

The EU Council notes that the extension of the sanctions is important due to Moscow’s continued aggressive policy in Ukraine, which is a serious violation of international law. Thus, the EU reaffirms its readiness to maintain and, if necessary, strengthen these measures.

Since February 2022, the EU has already adopted 12 sanctions packages in response to Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine.
