Relatives who have lost loved ones due to Russia’s full-scale aggression can apply to the Register of Damages in category A2.1. This category is intended to compensate for the emotional pain and suffering from the loss of relatives. This was reported by Markiyan Kliuchkovsky, Executive Director of the Register of Losses, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs

From now on, those who have lost their relatives due to the Russian invasion can apply to the International Register of Losses for compensation for mental suffering caused by the death of a close relative.

“For us, this is not just another stage in the work of the Register. This is a recognition of what thousands of Ukrainian families are going through who have lost their dearest ones – their relatives. We cannot bring back lives, but we can help you fight for justice, recognition and, ultimately, make your journey forward a little easier,” the International Register of Losses said in a press release.

More than 300 such applications have been submitted to the Register per day.

From now on, parents, spouses or civil partners, as well as children of persons who died as a result of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine since February 24, 2022, can now submit applications to the Register. Other family members may also apply if they prove a legitimate interest by providing evidence of a close relationship and elements of dependence with the family member, as defined in the Application Form and Rules in Category A2.1.

This is the second category of applications open for submission to the Registry. The first category (A3.1) concerns damage or destruction of residential real estate. As of today, the Register has received approximately 13,000 applications under category A3.1, with a total amount of declared losses of over EUR 800 million. Additional categories of claims are expected to be launched in the near future.

What is known about the A2.1 claim category

The new claim category deals with the applicant’s mental pain and suffering caused by the death of a close family member. Applicants are required to provide information about themselves, the identity of the deceased family member, their relationship with the deceased family member, and the event that caused the death. A significant amount of information and evidence will be automatically taken from various existing Ukrainian registers for further use by applicants when filling out and submitting applications to the Action.

Proof of pecuniary loss caused by the death of a close family member, such as loss of income or support, is not required to file an application in this category. Claims for this type of damage, loss or harm may be considered under other categories that will be open for filing in the future.
