Repair of an ancient bridge: how the border crossing between Ukraine and Romania will change
16 February 20:28
Traffic has been temporarily restricted on the Ukrainian-Romanian border due to repair work on the bridge. This concerns the Solotvyno-Sighetu Marmatiei checkpoint, which connects Zakarpattia with northern Romania, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The restrictions will be in effect from February 16 to April 3, 2026.
Why the restrictions were introduced
The Romanian side is continuing the reconstruction of the infrastructure of the ancient bridge over the Tisa River. This was officially announced by the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the Romanian side, the repair work will last 47 days and will require traffic restrictions during the daytime.
How the checkpoint will operate
- Restrictions for cars:
from 09:00 to 16:00, the checkpoint will operate with limited vehicle traffic. - Vehicle category:
mainly passenger cars up to 2.5 tons. - Pedestrian crossing:
will operate as usual, without changes.
During the normal period, the checkpoint handled approximately 450 vehicles per day in both directions.
- about 450 vehicles;
- up to 1,000 citizens.
What this means for travelers
The restrictions may lead to:
- queues and delays during the day;
- the need to re-plan routes, especially for trips with fixed time slots.
Travelers are advised to take the schedule of restrictions into account in advance and, if necessary, use alternative border crossing points with Romania.
Border crossing points in the Zakarpattia region remain important not only for tourism, but also for:
- citizen transit;
- labor migration;
- local border traffic.
Therefore, even daytime restrictions at one of the busiest checkpoints in the region are significant for local residents and carriers, especially on the eve of increased mobility in the spring.
