Raid in the Black Sea: DIU fighters destroy Russian Vityaz on Tendra Spit

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported the successful landing of its soldiers on the Tendra Spit at night on September 19. Special forces from the Viking Maritime Operations Center set up minefields and ambushed the Ukrainians, [Komersant] reports.

The “Vityaz” fell into the trap

According to the GUR, the operation destroyed the DT-10 Vityaz multipurpose tracked tractor, which the Russians used to deliver troops, ammunition, and provisions. This dealt a blow to the logistics of the occupation forces in the area.

Systematic tactics

This is not the first time that Ukrainian intelligence officers have raided the Tendra Spit in Kherson region, which is under Russian occupation.

  • In July, Ukrainian Special Forces destroyed a Russian military position, a Zont electronic warfare system and a Rosa radar station.
  • Such landings demonstrate that Ukrainian forces are using the tactic of localized strikes behind enemy lines to weaken their control over coastal areas.

Geographical significance

The Tendra Spit is a long strip of sand in the Black Sea, located south of Kherson Oblast. Its occupation is of strategic importance for Russia, as it allows it to control a section of the coast and use the territory for military operations.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukrainian forces have repeatedly raided islands and spits in the Black Sea. The most famous example was the battle for Zmeinyi Island in 2022, after which Russia was forced to retreat. Now, similar pinpoint attacks continue in lesser-known but strategically important areas, such as the Tendra Spit.
