Russian Federation intensifies drone attacks: preparing for daily swarms of thousands of Shahed

In the near future, Russia will be able to launch about 1,000 drones of the Shahed type across Ukraine. This statement was made by Valeriy Borovik, founder of the First Contact company, which specializes in the production of drones, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Ukraine will be hit by 1,000 UAVs a day, we should be prepared: monthly strikes of the Russian Federation will increase by 10-20%,” Borovik said.
It should be noted that the media have already said that the Russian Federation has already scaled up the production of kamikaze drones and increased their purchases from third countries.
Large-scale UAV attacks and new risks for Ukraine: what foreign mass media are informing about
As The Economist wrote at the end of May, the result of such optimization will be massive attacks by the Russian Armed Forces on Ukraine. Just for one such, the terrorist country will be able to launch up to a thousand UAVs.
While a year ago a simultaneous attack by 30 drones seemed exceptional, now the number of UAVs launched is in the hundreds. Ukrainian intelligence estimates that the Russian Federation is already planning to launch 500 drones daily, which means potential massive attacks.
In addition, drones have become technically better. Now they are no longer GPS-dependent, but are powered by artificial intelligence and can connect to the Ukrainian internet. There is even evidence that the control takes place via Telegram bots in real time. Because of this, Ukrainian mobile groups with machine guns and MANPADS lose effectiveness, because drones maneuver more difficult, fly at altitudes up to 2,500 meters and change trajectory in flight.
However, Ukraine is adapting. Not only air defense, but also helicopters, interceptors and F-16s are already being used to combat the threat. Despite the increasing number of attacks, Kiev manages to shoot down up to 95% of the drones. However, even 5% of breakthroughs cause serious damage.
The situation with ballistic missiles is worse. Ukraine has at least 8 Patriot batteries, but some of them may be under repair. The PAC-3 system remains virtually the only way to intercept such missiles, but its production is limited. Lockheed Martin plans to produce 650 missiles a year – fewer than the expected number of new Russian ballistic missiles. That said, two interceptor missiles often go at the same target.
Predictions of powerful Russian drone attacks: why there was a collision between the media and the AFU Air Force
In early June 2025, Air Force spokesman Yuri Ignat said on the air of a national telethon that in the future we need to prepare for an increase in the number of UAVs during enemy attacks.
A journalist asked the military officer if Russia would be able to launch 1,000 drones in one attack. Ignat answered as follows:
Of course, we need to prepare for an increase, because the trend is such. The trend to increase production is there, just take the statistics that we give every morning on night strikes. We can talk about figures of 1,000 UAVs and so on, of course, but now the enemy is already using up to 500.
After that, a number of Ukrainian media, citing Yuriy Ignat, wrote that Russia would hit Ukrainian cities with a thousand drones, terrorizing civilians.
The AFU Air Force was forced to react and officially refute such information.
The head of the Air Force Communications Department, Colonel Y. Ignat, has nowhere and to no one stated that Russia will launch 1,000 drones per night! Once again, we urge the media to check sources and not to use Air Force officials for the purpose of hype. Thank you,” the military said in a statement on June 7, 2025.
Nikolai Beleskov, a senior analyst at Return Alive, also spoke in early June about Russia’s inability to launch such powerful attacks. According to him, preparing bombardments with hundreds of drones requires much more time and people. For example, in May 2025, Russia launched an average of 100-150 Shaheds and imitators per day. However, on one day it could be almost 300, on another day it could be a few dozen.

However, already on August 4, one of the largest combined attacks occurred. The Russians fired 550 drones and missiles at Ukraine. Air defense defused 478 means of air attack. Despite this, only in Kiev counted 20 locations with damage. In total, more than 20 people were affected, among them there is a child.
Solomenskyi district suffered the most. Damaged more than 30 apartment buildings, 5 educational institutions, many private houses. In Svyatoshinsky district consequences and damage to at least 6 locations. Damaged 2 and 3 floors of a 14-story apartment building. There is also damage in Dniprovskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts, and in Darnitskyi and Goloseevskyi – debris found in the open area.
