Media: Kornienko to lead work on law on elections “in time of war”

16 December 12:14

A working group will be set up under the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada to draft a bill on the possibility of holding elections under martial law. The decision was made by MPs at the Conciliation Board.

This was reported to RBC-Ukraine by an informed source, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to him, the working group will be headed by First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Oleksandr Kornienko. Representatives of public organizations will also be involved in its work.

Elections in Ukraine

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said that Ukraine had allegedly lost its democratic status due to the long absence of elections. He claimed that the war was being used as an excuse not to hold the vote.

In response, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized his readiness to participate in the elections. According to him, he asked the United States to ensure the security of the electoral process, which would allow the elections to be held within 60-90 days.

In addition, Zelenskyy said that he expects proposals from MPs on legislative changes that would allow the elections to be organized under martial law.

The President emphasized that he supports holding elections to leave no room for manipulation.

The issue of holding early presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine under martial law is currently purely theoretical. The key problem remains the inability to ensure the safety of citizens due to constant shelling throughout the country.

As a reminder, the next local elections were supposed to be held on October 26, but due to the martial law, they were not possible.

Earlier, Zelensky emphasized that the state was technically ready to organize elections, but they could only take place after a complete ceasefire.
