Russia launched drone attacks on Naftogaz facilities: what is known about the consequences
6 April 09:42
Russian occupation forces launched drone attacks on facilities belonging to the Naftogaz group in the Poltava and Sumy regions. This was reported by Serhiy Koretskyi, chairman of the board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
According to him, a gas production facility in the Poltava region, which had already been attacked the day before, was hit, as well as another oil and gas facility in the Sumy region.
In Sumy region, a fire broke out following the strike, and units of the State Emergency Service were called in to extinguish it. The company emphasized that employees were in shelters, so none of the staff were injured. Naftogaz specialists and relevant services are working to address the aftermath of the attack.
What exactly happened in the Poltava and Sumy regions
According to Naftogaz, in Poltava region, the Russians again struck a gas production facility that had already been shelled on April 4. In other words, this is not an isolated incident, but the second consecutive attack on the company’s infrastructure.
In the Sumy region, another oil and gas facility came under fire, where a fire broke out.
It should be noted that Russia did not strike various locations at random but continued targeted attacks specifically on elements of the energy and gas production infrastructure. This marks the second consecutive day of strikes on its assets.
Naftogaz is one of the key companies in the Ukrainian energy sector. The group includes, in particular, Ukrgazvydobuvannya—the country’s largest gas production company—as well as other structures critical to the energy system. That is why strikes on such facilities are significant not only as local incidents but as attacks on Ukraine’s broader energy resilience.
Have there been similar attacks before?
On April 4, Russian troops attacked Naftogaz Group infrastructure assets in the Poltava region with drones, which also caused a fire. And on March 29, the company’s production assets in the Sumy region came under attack, where significant damage and fires were also reported.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has carried out 401 attacks on Naftogaz Group infrastructure. In 2025 alone, the company recorded 229 attacks—more than in the previous three years combined. In total, since 2022, over 1,700 weapons, including missiles, drones, and artillery, have been used against the group’s facilities.

What is known about the consequences
As of the time of official reports, the main confirmed consequences include a second strike on a gas production facility in the Poltava region, an attack on an oil and gas facility in the Sumy region, and a fire at one of them.
There is no information on casualties or injuries among personnel—Naftogaz stated that all employees were in shelters.
What does this mean for Ukraine
Repeated strikes on Naftogaz facilities indicate that Russia continues to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure not only with missiles but also with drones. Particularly alarming is that the attacks have occurred two days in a row and have affected several regions at once. This increases the risks to production, transportation, and the overall resilience of the power grid, even if the specific consequences of each strike are still being assessed.
