Russia attacks bioethanol plant in Sumy region with drones: experts assess the consequences

Last night, Russia attacked a bioethanol plant in the Lebedynska community of Sumy region with drones. Tanks were damaged, and there is a molasses spill. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Sumy Regional Military Administration.

According to preliminary data, 12 drones were recorded in the community. There were no casualties, the regional military administration reported.

“Drones hit an enterprise in the village of the community. The strikes caused a fire. It was a bioethanol plant. Tanks were damaged, and molasses was spilled. Fortunately, there were no casualties,” the statement said.

Bioethanol is an ethyl alcohol produced by fermenting sugar or starch from plant materials such as corn, wheat, or sugar beet.

It is used as a biofuel or fuel additive when mixed with gasoline.

In addition to the company’s premises, about 10 private houses were damaged.

Experts are assessing the environmental impact. The final extent of the damage is being clarified.

In total, Russia killed four people in Sumy and wounded 28 in the region over the past day. One civilian born in 1977 was wounded in Seredina-Buda community.

During the day, from the morning of June 3 to the morning of June 4, 2025, Russian troops fired almost 110 times at 27 settlements in 13 territorial communities of the region.

Most of the attacks were recorded in Sumy and Shostka districts.

The enemy was actively using guided aerial bombs, MLRS and dropping explosives from UAVs:

  • almost 40 MLRS attacks;
  • more than 20 UAV drops of explosive ordnance;
  • more than 10 strikes by UAVs.

The enemy also attacked the territory of Sumy region with UAVs and FPV drones.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

  • in Sumy community, non-residential buildings, 15 residential buildings, 13 cars, a medical facility, and civilian infrastructure were damaged;
  • in Seredyna-Budska community, 2 apartment buildings and 2 private houses were damaged;
  • non-residential buildings and about 10 private houses were damaged in Lebedynska community.
