Russia attacked energy facilities in four regions: what is happening in the energy system
2 February 13:06
Russian troops have once again struck Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. As of Monday morning, February 2, the attacks have left consumers in four regions without power. This was reported by Ukrenergo, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to the transmission system operator, emergency power cuts had to be implemented in some regions, which will be lifted as soon as the situation in the power system stabilizes.
Where the effects of the attacks have been recorded
Due to strikes on energy facilities, consumers in the following regions were left without power:
- Sumy region;
- Kharkiv region;
- Dnipropetrovsk region;
- Cherkasy region.
Ukrenergo emphasizes that emergency repair work is continuing wherever the security situation allows.
“Emergency repair work is underway wherever the security situation currently allows,” the company said.
Weather factors have worsened the situation
In addition to the consequences of enemy attacks, the power system has been subjected to additional stress due to ice and freezing of power lines.
As of Monday morning:
- 162 settlements were completely or partially without power;
- problems were reported in the Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kirovohrad regions.
Repair crews from the regional power company are already working to restore the damaged networks.
Why are power outage schedules in effect?
Ukrenergo reminded that due to the consequences of previous massive shelling throughout Ukraine, the following are currently in effect:
- power restriction schedules are being applied to industry;
- hourly power outage schedules are in effect for all categories of consumers.
In a number of regions, additional emergency power cuts have been introduced, which are temporary in nature.
Cold weather has increased electricity consumption
The situation is complicated by a sharp cold snap. According to Ukrenergo, electricity consumption in Ukraine has increased.
As of 9:30 a.m., consumption was 7.5% higher than at the same time on the previous working day.
“The reason for the changes is a significant drop in temperature throughout Ukraine, as well as fewer restrictions in some regions,” the company explained.
Energy companies are urging consumers to use electricity sparingly, especially during peak hours, in order to reduce the load on the system.
