Russia has announced its intention to accept up to 1 million labor migrants from India to cover the shortage of skilled workers. This was announced by the chairman of the Ural Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Andrey Besedin, Russian propaganda outlet RBC reports, citing the Russian news agency EAN, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to Besedin, by the end of 2025, a significant number of Indian specialists are expected to arrive, including in the Sverdlovsk region. It is planned to open the Consulate General of India in Yekaterinburg to coordinate these processes.
“We are critically short of people. Young people don’t want to work in production, some of the staff is involved in the war, so the situation is difficult,” he said.
In addition to India, Russia is also negotiating to attract workers from Sri Lanka and North Korea, but, according to the official, there may be difficulties with them due to the language barrier and cultural differences.
Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Labor predicted that by 2030, the shortage of personnel in the country could exceed 3.1 million people. The agency proposed to increase quotas for attracting foreign labor by 1.5 times – up to 235 thousand people in 2025.
Already in 2024, Indian workers started working in some regions of Russia. In particular, they were hired by the Kaliningrad fish processing complex “For the Motherland”.
