Russia demands UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine: what is the reason?

Russia is demanding a meeting of the UN Security Council on July 31 to discuss attempts to disrupt the negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.

This was announced by Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky, quoted by Russian media, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

“We propose to focus on discussing actions that undermine the search for a diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian conflict, including attempts to disrupt the direct Russian-Ukrainian negotiation track in Istanbul,” the diplomat said.

Addressing the members of the UN Security Council, he added that Moscow has “long and consistently” offered to “resolve the Ukrainian crisis through diplomacy.”

“But you are not satisfied with this as long as you are ready to continue fighting Russia with the hands of Ukrainians. And the fact that their number is decreasing does not bother you at all,” the diplomat said.

He added that Russia will continue to “destroy Kyiv’s military infrastructure as part of the demilitarization of this country, which is one of the goals of the SMO.”

“We are not hitting civilian objects that suffer exclusively from the actions of Ukrainian air defense, which is located in residential areas of cities, violating the norms of the SMM,” he emphasized.

Polyansky added that “the more military supplies you supply to Kyiv, the more strikes you will have.”

As a reminder, the third round of talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Istanbul on July 23. The delegations discussed their memoranda on the settlement of the war.
