This attack was part of a massive airstrike on Ukraine.

According to the Air Force, on the night of April 2, Russia deployed 172 attack drones of various types, including Shahed, “Gerbera,” and “Italmas.”

As of 8:00 a.m., air defense forces had shot down or neutralized 147 enemy UAVs, but 22 strike drones were recorded hitting 12 locations.

What exactly happened at the port in the Odesa region

According to official reports, one of the ports in the Odesa region was struck. The attack damaged storage areas and hangars, as well as administrative and residential buildings.

Separately, there were reports of containers and a civilian vehicle catching fire.

All relevant services were on the scene.

Preliminary reports indicate there are no casualties or injuries.

Such strikes are not uncommon in the Odesa region. Earlier, the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development reported an increase in threats to port infrastructure and emphasized the need for additional protection.

The ministry’s statement noted the increase in attacks on ports amid the war and the importance of preserving the region’s logistical capabilities.

Why is Russia targeting port infrastructure specifically?

The ports of the Odesa region are critical to the Ukrainian economy, exports, and maritime logistics. A significant portion of cargo traffic, including agricultural products and other goods, passes through these facilities.

Attacks on ports, warehouses, hangars, and transportation infrastructure are aimed at disrupting logistics operations, halting shipments, and increasing risks for businesses. Against this backdrop, even attacks without a large number of casualties can have a serious economic impact.

As early as March 2025, the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development reported that since the start of the full-scale war, Russia had attacked Ukrainian ports more than 70 times, damaged or destroyed hundreds of port infrastructure facilities, and struck civilian vessels.

What is known about the scale of the nighttime attack on April 2

According to the Air Force, drones were launched from several directions, including the regions of Bryansk, Kursk, Orel, Millerovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Donetsk, and occupied Crimea.

The air attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare units, unmanned systems, and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

Despite the significant number of drones shot down, it was not possible to avoid all strikes. That is why infrastructure damage was reported in various regions of Ukraine, particularly in the Odesa region.

As of the morning of April 2, the air attack was still ongoing, indicating the scale and duration of the Russian Federation’s operation.

What the attack on Odesa region’s port infrastructure means

The strike on port infrastructure in the Odesa region has not only a military but also an economic dimension. Damage to warehouses, hangars, container yards, and auxiliary facilities poses risks to port operations, cargo transshipment, and the continuity of exports.

Even if there are no casualties, the consequences can affect shipping schedules, the safety of operations, and restoration costs.

This is particularly important given that Ukrainian sea routes remain critically important to the country’s economy.
